Chapter 12: A Meeting in the Dark

The three young men were taken past the Crownseeker barricade, down the street. Oliver stumbled along behind the Adjudicator holding him, forced to skip sideways to keep up with the man’s long strides. The Adjudicator’s robes slithered back and forth along his legs, the only sound in the empty street.

“Oliver,” Kelley’s voice came from behind. Oliver twisted to see him. Kelley was marching alongside the taller Adjudicator, his face a blank mask. “I’m sorry, Oliver,” he said.

He turned to Aldric, who was being dragged along on the Adjudicator’s other side, staring at the ground. “I’m sorry. This is all my fault. I’m...”

“Quiet,” the taller Adjudicator rumbled.

Kelley closed his mouth with a snap. The group continued on in silence.

Oliver barely noticed where the Adjudicators were taking them. Fear was battering down on him from all sides, mixing with fury at himself. What had he been thinking?
