Chapter 48: Best Friend's Best Guess

Micah

I’d screwed everything up again.

“Why don’t you just let her go out there and do what she needs to do, man?” Eli asks me over dinner, the same night that I’d p*ssed Zariah off about the shifts we were taking watching Oscar.

“It’s not that simple,” I tell him. “It’s not that I don’t think she can do it.”

“Then why not let her try?” he asks. “At least it’ll shut her up. If she gets hurt, then she’ll stop trying, and if she doesn’t, well, no harm done.”

I shake my head, wishing I felt comfortable explaining myself to him, but I know that if I try to tell Eli, who is my best friend, the truth about the situation, he’ll give me a hard time, and I’ll never hear the end of it.

So… I hesitate. But he’s right. I’m going to have to do something different. This time, I know Zariah isn’t going to forgive me either.
