Chapter 12: Stay Away

Hallie’s POV

I hand the napkin with my number on it to the guy who I now know as Dash. He looks pleased with himself as a smile forms on his lips and he slips the napkin into his back pocket.

“Great. I’ll text you.” Dash shoots me a wink before walking back to the table with his friends. I watch as they cheer for him and clap him on the back.

My insides churn at the sight and now I’m suddenly regretting giving him my number. I wasn’t thinking when I agreed. All I wanted to do was remind myself that nothing can happen with River, but instead, I just gave my number to a stranger with unknown intentions.

What were you thinking, Hallie? The thing is, I wasn’t.

I grip my new drink tightly as I walk back to the table. I can feel River’s eyes burning a hole in the side of my head as I sit down and take a long sip of the cool liquid, hoping it’ll wash away how embarrassed I feel.

“Who was that?” River wastes no time questioning me.
