Chapter 45: The Past

Hallie’s POV

“Your what? I ask dumbfounded, raising a confused brow at him. Did I hear him correctly?

“What was written on the victim’s body… Yeah, that was my original name before I changed it to River many decades ago.”

River is chewing on his bottom lip as he leans back on his heels to sit on the ground in front of me. He pulls his legs to his chest, wrapping his arms securely around them as if it were a comfort blanket.

My head is buzzing with questions as to why the killer vampire would be targeting River like this and how they would know his original name now. None of this is making sense to me, and judging by the way River’s brows are pulled into a tight frown and his features are hardened, he’s just as confused as I am.

“You changed your name? Why?”

River shrugs as he lifts his eyes to mine. They’re pooling with confusion and worry as they stare back at me, making me swallow hard as the nerves course through my veins.
