Chapter 101

"You're never going to believe who I ran into the other day." At a scarred pine table in the corner of Shooters, Parker glanced at his best friend since the age of diapers over the rim of his beer as he took a sip.

Jason's brows furrowed. "Must be good if you're mentioning it."

"Madeline Freemont."

A puff of his cheeks, and Jason ran his hand through his dark blond hair. "Damn. There's a name I wouldn't mind never hearing again. Did you go to the clinic to get vaccinated afterward?"

"Funny." Parker set his mug down, skimming his fingertips over the condensation on the glass. "I thought she was living upstate somewhere."

Jason tilted his blue eyes toward the ceiling as if in thought. "I seem to recall rumors about her presence a couple years back, but haven't heard any since. Where did you see her?"

"At the elementary school." He paused. "Where she's a janitor."
