Chapter 46

Paul shifted his phone to the other ear to give his left side a break. Jerry Braxton, with his booming voice, continued the one-way conversation with just an occasional "uh huh" from Paul as encouragement.

The sun beat through the window, chasing away the midmorning chill, as the van bumped along the dirt road nearing Black Canyon.

Sammy turned in her seat up front to face him, her eyebrows raised in question. They were all growing impatient waiting.

"And since y'all got the news stations in town, what with the sinkhole and all," Jerry said, "suddenly the Historical Society is changin' their tune about wanting to preserve the site. They're havin' a meeting to discuss constructing cutouts of the buildings that were torn down..."
