Chapter 19: Confrontations

I rode the elevator up to the office the next morning, my mind still whirling from yesterday. I kept ruminating on Ezra and his effects on me. What had gotten into me yesterday? I had never been attracted to a vampire before; had never seen them as more than monsters who needed to be killed. What was so different about Ezra that I couldn't seem to control myself around him? Or remember that even meeting him secretly was a quick way to earn my death sentence?

The elevator dinged, and I walked into the main office, so zoned out I almost didn't notice the silence that descended in the room when they saw me. Almost. I paused and looked around, noticing all the pitying stares in my direction. I had a sudden desire to touch my cheek. It was bruised from the slap yesterday and I could feel everyone staring.
