Chapter 39: Kleiner Teufel

Hearts beat as fear overwhelms the senses. In a game of numbers, the majority has the upper hand. I ride with Whinny as fast as she can gallop. The wolf pack assembles behind us. I notice a couple of large wolves bounding towards the sidelines. 'They're trying to assume a position to strike!' My mind races as blood pumps in my ears.

"I'm sorry, Whinny!" I cry out. "I don't know what to do!"

I feel the rise and fall of her body. Her hooves pound through the grass. One of the beasts lunges at her and snaps his jaws. I glare at the animal. Yet, I am grateful that the bite is nullified. 'Whinny is faster. Perhaps they will give up the hunt.' My hope begins to diminish as I hear the mare wheeze from exhaustion. Her gallop falters to a trot. My heart beats faster.

Within moments, Whinny stops. She turns to face the hunters. The wolves snarl and encircle the poor mare. Her stomps do not frighten the pack.

"Get back!" I shout while waving my arms violently.
