Chapter 45: Battleground

We all grew up in a world where the possibility of death was around every corner that you turn. I’ve seen children I was born in the same moon as laid to rest before they reached their tenth birthday and I’ve watched the light die in an old man’s eyes.

We’ve all seen death, we’ve all gotten used to the idea that death might take us sooner than we’d think.

I don’t think any of us were prepared for what this battle is really like. I get separated from the shifters following me almost as soon as I duck under the branch of the first tree-creature I reach and the next thing I do is trip over a huddle of dead bodies that have been tangled too tightly together that I don’t know how many there are.
