Chapter 46: A New Obstacle

I didn’t know what else to do, so I decided to run.

I shoved the picture into the photo album as quickly as I could, and made sure to put everything back on the bookshelf how I’d found it. I scrambled to get my purse from the couch and didn’t even double check that I had everything before I headed for the front door.

My heart pounded so loud that I didn’t hear the shower shut off.

“Hey, since we’re done, how about we watch your movie now?” Caleb’s distant voice asked.

Instead of answering, I grabbed the bag with the cakes by the door. I looked over my shoulder to make sure Caleb was still in the bathroom.

“Evie?” Caleb called, and I heard the door open.

That was my cue. I crept out as silently as I could, and made a run for it the second the door closed behind me.
