Thunder rumbled off in the distance, lightning briefly lighting up the cloud covered night sky. A steady drizzle of rain slowly started turning into a torrential downpour. The few people still awake and outside at this time scurried back into their houses, trying their best to avoid the rain along the way. The streets of the small town soon became desolate as not a soul lingered, except for two.
Running through the streets at breakneck speed was a man and a dog. The man named Eclipse who was completely drenched at this point had brown hair and eyes, glasses, and a build that was bordering on the line of obesity. He wore sneakers, jeans, and a bright neon yellow sweater shirt. On the shirt it said in bright red words "Yes I'm a weeb, yes I'm a nerd, yes I'm an otaku, and yes I'm proud".
In his left hand he carried an oddly large pillow that he seemed to be trying to shield from the rain with his body. What was even more strange was that if one didn't pay close attention in this weather they would think he was shielding a young woman from the rain as there was an anime figure printed in a lewd pose on this pillow.
In his right hand was a leash that was attached to a small and adorable shiba inu. It had bright orange fur with a Snow White underbelly. She had a smile plastered on her face as she frolicked next to her owner who was madly running to try and get out of the rain with breathing that only got more haggard by the second. Her tail wagging back and forth without a care in the world.
"Let's keep on running Coco and get out of this hell!" He shouted as encouragement to his dog Coco, though clearly he was just trying to encourage himself as Coco looked like she didn't have a care in the world rate now with the way she basked in the rain.
Eclipse ran through the streets with his dog and body pillow ignoring crosswalks and looking both ways entirely as he was solely focused on getting out of the rain that was pouring so much it felt like he was swimming rather than running. He wasn't worried too much as he had chosen a bright, reflective, neon yellow sweatshirt to alert any drivers to his presence. Besides, he figured no one would be stupid enough to drive in this weather that offered practically no visibility.
Running past a building at the corner of an intersection, Eclipse ran blindly forward through the intersection. Coco, the little sweetheart, loyally followed behind him like a little beacon of orange sunlight.
They made it about halfway through the intersection when Eclipse noticed it. Two large fierce eyes glaring at him with a blinding light. It was as if time at that moment had slowed down to practically a standstill. The rain practically seemed to stop midair, but the eyes kept on creeping closer inch by inch.
It was at this moment Eclipse moved faster than he had ever moved before, moving at a speed that almost didn't seem human. He picked Coco up, wrapping her in the body pillow of his newest waifu. He then cradled her in his arms shielding her from the monster rampaging forward behind him. All this happening in a split second.
He looked down at that obliviously loyal face wrapped in pillows and his arms. Coco matched his gaze looking back up at him with a smile and a thump of the tail wagging from inside her pillow cocoon.
Eclipse fell down to his knees completely soaked while looking at Coco with tear filled eyes smiling back at her oblivious and joyful face.
"Thank you for always being there for me and being my only friend." He whispered as light engulfed the two of them.

The next day the local newspaper cover was dominated with a topic about how the night sky cleared up all around the world at midnight instantly and six moons appeared in the night sky. Five moons formed a circle with a sixth moon in the center that had a slit down the entire center of the moon forming the shape of an eye. The entire slit in the center moon appeared to glow red for a few moments and then died down.
Clouds covered the sky over the entire planet and all electronics stopped working for a few seconds. After a few moments the skies cleared again, but this time there were no six moons in the sky, as if they never existed in the first place.
Nearly the entire newspaper covered this topic with various theories about what it could be and what it could mean. But if one paid close attention, they would've seen one single article at the bottom corner of the newspaper that wasn't about the moons.
The article went on to say- Man and dog died after being hit by a speeding truck last night. It then went on talking about how the driver was found to be under the influence and speeding, and that he would be charged in court for murder and driving under the influence.
At the very end of the article after it finished talking about the legal parts of the incidents it said something unexpected. Forensic reports and testimonies found the dog had actually survived the car crash with minimal injuries due to its owner shielding it from harm with his own body. However, the dog proceeded to die moments later even though it was completely fine and healthy.
According to the testimony of the driver of the truck, the dog tried to get its owner to move by nuzzling its face against him and licking him while whimpering. The driver then proceeded to tell police that it was as if the dog realized something after a few moments and then it howled. He claims it was the most heart broken sound he ever heard in his entire life. Then after it finished its mournful cry, it lay down in its owner's cold embrace and closed its eyes one last time.
