Chapter 29: The Homecoming

When Amanda woke, she was swaying gently. Her body was sore, and her arm throbbed in tandem with her pulse, licks of pain shooting from her injuries. She moaned and opened her eyes.

Levi’s face met her.

“Hey there,” he said, gently. “You still with me?”

Levi was carrying her in his arms. Clothed, and with her backpack fastened to his shoulders, he had nearly carried her all the way to the house, which stood just ahead. In front of them, the pups made a comical sight with their bags haphazardly secured to their backs, trotting along without a care in the world, it seemed.

Amanda rested her head on Levi’s shoulder.

“Still with you,” she managed.

“Good girl,” he said.

That did weird things to her insides, but she chose to ignore it for the time being.

“Almost home,” he continued. “We’ll get your arm cleaned up and wrapped, but it doesn’t look too bad. You’re gonna be okay.”

She nodded, head woozy.
