In a room, one Joshua had not explored the previous night, at the back of the house, sat Henry, Thomas, and Joshua. The room was lined with shelves which were stacked with books kept in aphabetical order. Each of the men around the glass table had a helping of whisky laid out before them, none of which had been drunk. Each took turns smoking their cigarettes and exchanging pleasant looks.
Henry spoke first, rigid and strong. “Good morning, Mr. Barker, I will assume Thomas explained to you the general reasoning for your being here today.” When Joshua nodded without word, Henry continued. “You are meeting with me now to receive the specifics of the position, as I do with all of my employees, and if I like what is said over the next bit of time I will make you a formal offer of employment to which I hope you will accept.”
