Chapter 43

Three days had passed since the events of that evening which shook the little Wyoming town. It was a cool, sunny morning and the birds were out aplenty.

Joshua, Ivory, and the recently returned Rufus continued to work on the house which had suffered a large amount of damage. Neither Joshua nor Ivory had changed clothes or left each other’s side. They worked on getting a new door from a tradesman in town, to which Ivory paid him well, and every last dollar was returned to the Irons’ vault below the factory.

The morning following her death, Maybella was burried in the garden of the Irons estate by Joshua and Ivory, who spoke in remembrance. It was the next day which Rufus returned, learning of the death of his oldest and dearest friend. Ivory told him of the final night and held him close while he raged and sobbed and demanded to know why God had not saved her.
