Chapter 40: Return to Denhurst

“Get back in the truck, Emma,” Grey told me. He put up a hand to the charging wolf. “I have no quarrel with you. Let's talk.”

But the wolf continued on his path toward his target, which I could now see was Grey. I heard the wolf’s mind scream, “the son of the traitor and mutilator of the innocent must die!”

“No!” I screamed back, clenching my fists. “Stop …”

I broke off my words when I saw that instead of racing toward Grey, the wolf was now moving in extreme slow motion. A look around the yard told me the attacking wolf wasn’t the only one who was barely moving.

I knew he was hoping to diffuse the situation without violence. But I didn’t think that would happen, and Grey was leaving himself open for injury or worse.

I touched Grey’s shoulder, and he seemed to snap out of a stupor.

“Shift … now!” I exclaimed.
