Chapter 19

"The doctor said the antibiotics should be two in the morning, two in the afternoon, and two in the evening," he instructed making it visible for me to see too.

After a pause, while he selected the other drugs, he continued showing me another packet of drugs.

"This one is pain killer, it will subdue your pains: it should be taken once three times a day".

I lost count on what he was saying as I just saw the various tablets patrol before my eyes. When he was done, he said to me,

"If you are ready, I will give you a ride home," he let out.

I asked in a little weeny voice worried about the bills.

"Excuse me, what about the bills?" I questioned.

"Do not worry about that, it has been sorted out, by me," he whispered politely.

I was too embarrassed to even tell him thank you. My angry words still lurked in my mind causing me too much internal conflict with myself.

I thought Nicholas will be so heartless as to walk away from my leaving me to struggle on my own.

What I had were sandals and they were now bad, in fact, I could barely wear them because it will make my feet throb.

Putting my feet to the cold floor, I grabbed the pair of crutches.

"Freeze!"

Nicholas blurted out even before I could position the crutches under my armpit.

I shuddered, cringing my head to glare at him.

"Put on your shoes first," he said.

I freeze knowing fully well that they were bad as he went for them.

"No, it is okay, do not bother," I said reaching for his shoulder.

I placed my hands on his shoulder as time seemed to stop. Although Nicholas was mad at me, he did not care for one beat about what I was say saying to him.

He still cared about me somehow, I wonder why.

Immediately as he held the shoe, the sole of it decided to disgrace me in front of this wealthy man by collapsing before his eyes.

Nicholas seemed more embarrassed than I was, with his flat nose wriggling as if my shoes smelled.

I closed my eyes immediately as the scene was so humiliating.

"I warned you," I mumbled.

Continuing, I said, "I can walk barefooted, by the way, there is no much difference now," I said trying all means possible to keep my mind cool despite this embarrassment.

I tried dragging my legs with the injured leg freshly bandaged and aloof the floor.

"Megan, I said you should freeze. There is no way I will stand here and watch you walk barefooted. What if you walk on a nail? or even a syringe? please, just hold on for a second let me see what I can do,"

Nicholas said.

Before I could argue, the next thing just happened like a flash, I did not see this coming neither did I expect it.

Nicholas gently placed a hand around my waist, lifted me effortlessly, and carefully plopped me on the bed.

"I will be right back," he assured me before leaving.

"OMG! did Nicholas Larry just carry me?" I said when I was certain that he was out of sight.

'I might never wash my hands again,' I thought laughing at my stupidity.

Nicholas had ignited a warm fire in me, I do not think it was on purpose but he did it anyway, didn't he?__I rolled my eyes__

I wondered where this man had gone too and what he was up to.

I knew he will take several minutes before showing up again, I wished he brings some food along when he comes back because I was already starving myself to death.

It was barely 8:30 a.m but I felt like starving to death already. I wasn't even sure of the time, maybe the day has been more than spent yet I did not know.

**

About fifteen minutes of being away, Nicholas knocked slightly in the door before entering. He had a beautiful pair of women's slippers.

It wasn't that last grade of rubber neither was it the first grade, but it looked nice, modern, and new.

It was already morning therefore business centers were already opened especially in a big economic capital like Douala.

"Sorry I wasted a lot of time," he apologized.

"No problems at all, but you shouldn't have worried about getting me slippers," I said just for formalities, I desperately needed the shoes.

"A thank you will do," he said rudely.

Ouch! this sounded like a blow to me especially as I wasn't expecting his remark.

"Thank you," I mouthed.

"Very good then, I did not know your shoe size, and I barely had time to examine your feet. I chose a size thirty-nine, by the way, I hope it suits you," I heard him say.

That was my shoe size and as he had guessed well, the slippers entered my feet like they were carved for it.

"Thank you so much for this and for all what you have done, I promise the moment I have the money, I will pay every time you have had to ever spend on me," I said, clapping my hands together.

"I know you will, but before then, let me take you home I have got many things to do today," he announced trying to end the discussion.

"Sure, you should be at work today, I am sorry you have not had enough sleep too at night, if you do not mind, I can take care of myself now, let me just have my bag, I can take the cab home," I explained.

Nicholas's next words pierced me as of they were blades to me, he uttered,

"I know that you can take care of yourself, that is what has landed you in this hospital bed and two crutches as companions now,"

His words were like daggers, he wasn't wrong at all, I was the one that was too irrational and too irresponsible to take care of yourself.

Staring at him with defeat, I let out, "Fine, boss, please take me home,"

He gave me a cheerful look and whispered assuringly,

"The pleasure is mine."
