Death is Inevitable

These bastards… Mia grit her teeth. She was being chased by multiple squadrons of soldiers. 'I should've known that this mission was a trap!' Her face contorted, reflecting her fury as she continued to run, weaving in and out, left and right through the narrow alleyways of a slum in the backwaters of Siberia.

Everything was going just fine with her mission, that is… until she went to assassinate her final target. As she reached their bedroom and quietly slipped in, there were immediately 15-20 red lasers trained at her chest. She bolted, getting shot multiple times in the process, which only passed through her body harmlessly. As long as her core wasn't harmed, she could and would reform given time.

'Those old bastards set me up! I'll find them… and the person who gave them the guts to pull off such a risky power play. After all, those old bastards wouldn't make such a risky move unless they were certain they could succeed without being harmed…' Running, she was met with a dead end. Checkmate.

"You're surrounded! Mia Dawn, I suggest you raise your hands and announce any weapons you may have! Lest you be run through by my boys' and I's guns!" A soldier stepped out, clearly more distinguished than the rest, judging by his shiny golden badges pinned to his uniform. It clearly proved to be a mistake, using the form of Mia Dawn while going on "vacation". Mia growled. Now she would have to start all over again in conquering her Darling! With clear reluctance, she made a sudden move, startling the soldiers, causing them to start blindly firing.

When the smoke cleared from the rubble, the soldiers were met with Mia Dawn's body. Or to be more precise, it was the ability Assimilate's second half. Just as she could assimilate others, she could also essentially eject them from her, re-forming their body with their memories and everything intact, with no recollection of what had happened.

As the soldiers rejoiced, glad to be receiving a handsome reward for their work from the higher-ups, the slime watched on from the dark. Whoever was responsible for this… Would have to pay…

With that, the slime slithered away into a nearby pipe, quickly entering where it would remain for a while to re-gather its strength, before coming back… with a vengeance…

Meanwhile back at school, Sky felt his phone buzz; he had received a text. Casually, taking a glance, it was from his friend, Weaver_of_Fate. Upon closer inspection, he realized he was just sent a news article."Student from Yokai High School Amongst Dead in Deadly Air Raid" Followed with another text: "OMG, isn't your girlfriend in Siberia right now on vacation?!"

Sky immediately clicked on it. "Mia Dawn, a high schooler at Yokai High School, was found dead, presumably shot by the Rebellion's forces…" He didn't have to read further. It wasn't possible. Right? He texted Mia on his phone, asking if she was alright. No response. He rushed out of the classroom, not caring about the inquisitive stares of his classmates, calling Mia over and over. No response.

Sky's vision turned blurry, his world seemed to spin. His heart wrenched, seemingly tearing itself apart. How could this be?! Why was the world so cruel?! He collapsed on his knees, sobbing in the bathroom uncontrollably. He pulled up pictures of him and Mia together, shopping, singing, cooking, etc. and smiled through the tears. Sky sat there sobbing, but eventually, even his tears ran dry. He stumbled home, his eyes empty.

Skadi, seeing Sky's condition, immediately opened the door for him, rushing out to meet him. "It's not like I care or anything but are you okay Sky?!" Eyes full of concern, she tried to express her feelings of concern for him, but in the end, was only able to get it out upon acting as if she didn't care. Old habits die hard. Sky, in no condition to talk, merely muttered "Yeah. I'm fine. Just tired." before dragging his feet to his room, promptly locking the door and collapsing on his bed, escaping reality through the sweet embrace of sleep.

Little did he know, 2 pairs of eyes were watching him, and even through their hate for each other, they strangely thought along the same lines of. 'Sky, you poor thing~. But don't worry, I'll be there to comfort you and take the spot of girlfriend~.'

For the next few days, Sky seemed to have fallen into a slump. He would wake up, shove down some food, before going back to sleep. Skadi tried her best to cheer him up, bringing him food everyday to his room, trying to make him laugh with various jokes, but to no avail. Everyone around him grew increasingly concerned. It seemed that Mia's death impacted him even harder than they had originally thought.

One day, while he was sleeping, he dreamt of Mia. He ran after her, but it seemed as if the distance between them would never decrease. She eventually turned around, smiling sadly.

"Why did you leave me here by myself?!" Sky couldn't help but call out somewhat angrily.

"I'm sorry Sky… I'm sorry for leaving you and this world so soon when I promised to be there for you…" Mia said softly, her eyes glistening with tears.

"This isn't healthy Sky… You have to move on, you have to pick yourself up, no matter what life throws at you…" She continued, before approaching and kissing him, right on the lips, before pulling away once more.

"It seems it's my time to leave now… Remember, I'll always support and love you…" She called out, smiling, as she dissipated into particles of light.

"N-no, don't! Don't go!" Sky called out, his arms frantically trying to grasp Mia's rapidly dissipating form, but to no avail.

Sky woke up, tears staining his face, his dream still so vivid in his mind. His eyes showed his resolve. 'I have to pick myself up. I have to move on. It's what Mia would've wanted.'

He slowly picked himself up from bed, taking a shower before walking to the dining room, where Skadi was making breakfast. With only the smell of something being slightly burnt, one could tell she was definitely improving in her cooking ability.

Skadi, noticing Sky, walked up to him. He smiled weakly, but suddenly felt something hit his cheek. Skadi's hand. "Do you know just how worried I was?! You looked like you lost your purpose, that you lost the will to live! Do you even understand how worried I was for you?!" She cried, hitting his chest repeatedly.

Sky then realized his mistake. He realized that Skadi cared for him, as a friend, yet he had simply ignored her, succumbing to his sadness. "I'm sorry Skadi… Will you forgive me?" He said, wiping her tears with his hand.

"O-only if you g-go with me to the mall! Not that I really w-want to be seen with someone like y-you or anything!" But it was obvious with the way Skadi kept looking at him intently that she really did care.

"As you wish, your majesty." Sky said, smiling.

"This queen knew her loyal subject would heed her command!" Skadi smiled back, triumphantly.

They laughed before sitting down and eating breakfast, where Sky mocking Skadi's bad cooking caused Skadi to get up and start chasing him around the house with a spatula, eventually devolving into them both on the floor, laughing uncontrollably.

Sending Sky off to school, Skadi's gaze turned cold. "Come on out. I know you're here. You dare trespass on this queen's domain?"
