At the break of their eighteenth birthday, the young adults of Selkie travel in droves to drink Sunburst. The serum is concocted by the priests, who in ceremony bless each person in finding their Twin Ray.

Islet has waited eighteen long years and is eager to know the face of her soul mate. In a cruel twist of fate, she learns that the Holy One has paired her with royalty. But not just any royalty, Prince Cerulean of the neighboring country, who has recently announced his engagement to Princess Marilla of Selkie. The same princess that Islet can't stand.

Father leans in my ear briefly and whispers, “You must show the Queen your appetite. Or I’ll look like a liar.”


“You expect me to eat when I’m this nervous.”


“Pretend it’s just you and him.” 


He says then pulls away before I can respond. The princess watches us, still curious. 


I want to get up and walk away, it’s just too awkward. 


The next dish is served. A grilled salmon with a garden salad.


That goes down much easier and faster since it isn’t hot. Occasionally Queen Cordelia will talk to fill the awkward silence. But the king on the other hand just mildly stuffs his face and ignores everyone else. 


“Adrian, you said that you moved here from Selkie. Why is that?” Queen Cordelia asks. 


Father clears his throat and wipes off his mouth. “Your Highness, I decided to expand my jewelry business here to your wonderful kingdom.”


She stares at him. Her expression is unreadable.


“Do you have time for jewels working as a butler?” She asks.
