Chapter 48

My adrenaline soared, not from fear but from rage. I felt the power build to bursting in the blink of an eye — I jumped. Big Nose's face registered the surprise I felt when I instantly appeared inches in front of him, my spear impaling his shield and body. His sword clattered to the floor. He gripped my arm and stared, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth, as I watched the light fade from his eyes. Finally, he slid off my weapon, dead before hitting the floor.

The other three mercenaries, astonished and unbelieving, recovered quickly and advanced on me, spreading out like the professionals they were. Then they turned to Merlin, each taking an involuntary step back. The two closest to me raised their weapons while the third dropped his shield and sword and ran to the backside of Excalibur and crouched, cowering behind the stone pedestal.
