Chapter 22: Central Park Zoo

Micah woke in the backseat to the sound of the car door opening.

Mel leaned in and smiled. She had changed into a one piece business suit and looked showered and refreshed.

“Wakey, wakey, sleepy head,” she said.

Micah rubbed his eyes. “What time is it?”

“Almost nine.”

“Nine?” Micah gasped, suddenly realizing he’d completely missed his breakfast with Rory. “What the hell, Mel? Why wake me up at four AM to introduce me to Jessa and then just leave me in a car?”

“Sorry we can’t all adhere to your schedule,” Mel said. “Are you ready or not?”

“Ready for what?”

She ushered him out of the car and he stepped into the early morning sunlight. Tall trees stretched toward the blue sky, surrounding a fenced in concrete lot. Two large trucks were parked beside the car.

“C’mon,” Mel said, leading the way toward an opaque gate.
