When the door to the security office opened, Rory immediately thought the worst. Colton, her editor, stepped in, his expression unreadable.
“Rory, good morning.”
“Hi,” Rory said. “Did I…am I supposed to be here?”
“Here? No, this was a misunderstanding.”
“Sorry, I’m confused. Am I supposed to be back at work?”
“Oh,” Colton said. “Yes, of course. There was a mistake in our system that had you listed as a former employee. But I figured I’d come here and offer you my sincerest apologies in person.”
Rory stared at him, convinced this was a joke. In her four years of working for Colton, she’d never heard him apologize to anyone, and that included the time he confused the husky security guard for a man. Before she could say anything, he continued talking.
“Listen–how do you feel about covering the mayor’s re-election campaign party tonight? He already agreed to a one on one interview.”
