Chapter 25: The Campaign Party

Unlike the majority of the guests who arrived in limos, Rory and Jared pulled up to the campaign party in an uber. A red carpet lined the front of the hotel, and Rory recognized more than one famous face pausing to take photos.

Dressed in the fanciest thing she owned, a backless, floor length navy blue dress, Rory stepped out of the car, answering Rachel’s fifth attempt at calling her.

“Rachel, I can’t talk,” she whispered.

“Have you seen it?” Rachel snapped. “The photo of him and Mel?”

“Yeah,” Rory said. “I saw it.”

“Where is he? He’s not answering my calls. This looks bad, Rory.”

“I don’t know what you want me to do, Rachel. I’m covering his dad’s campaign party for work, I have to go.”

“Rory, wait–”

Rory hung up, silenced her phone and stuffed it in her purse.

“Rachel?” Jared asked.

“What gave it away?” Rory asked. They bypassed the red carpet, walking toward the press entrance, a back door with a single bodyguard. Rory was grateful there were no photographers.
