Chapter 29: The Decision

Micah watched, helpless, as Rory was wheeled into the room in an identical metal chair. She was still unconscious, her head slumped forward, her chin resting on her chest. As her chair was parked beside his, Jessa stood up.

But instead of facing Micah and Rory, Jessa faced the committee.

“Ladies and gentlemen, I am going to submit to you today that Rory Jenkins is not turning into a Shifter.”

The entire room broke out into whispers, and Micah looked at Jessa.

Elisha stood up. “She was bitten by the Rogue One. She has the scar–and it’s the only thing that explains the Rogue One writing her name at the zoo. Her and the Rogue One have the Red Bond.”

“I agree that she has the Red Bond with the Rogue One,” Jessa continued. “But there is no documentation in any Shifter history that a Shifter bite guarantees transformation.”

One of the Others stood up. “Jessa, you know that’s because the majority of humans bitten by Shifters die. Rory’s survival is an anomaly.”
