Chapter 21: I'll come to you

The little park was suddenly quiet as if the people and animals and plants all held their breaths. Rafe clenched his teeth. Now he knew what women meant when they complained about being used as sex objects. He also wasn't going to let this opportunity go. "Tomorrow night?"

She shook her head, and he fought the disappointment; he wouldn't give up that easily.

"It will have to be next week when my friend Dara takes the boys to the movies," she said, thoughtful, eyes narrowed as if she saw a calendar in her mind.

He almost sagged visibly but caught himself. "I'll pick you up then."

Her cheeks turned a bright red, but that stubborn chin lifted. "No, I'll come to you." So that she could go home when she wanted? Rafe was insulted. No woman had ever wanted to leave him.

"Afraid I'll keep you too long? Maybe you won't want to go home," he taunted. Did this mean she didn't have any lovers in the last five years? It shouldn't, but it pleased him.
