Rafe bit back a curse. They glared at him, but he could see the hurt on their faces. For once in his life, he didn't know what to say.
Lindi stood with clenched hands, her chest heaving. She closed her eyes for a second, then visibly pulled herself together. For a long moment, she stood there as if deciding something. Her fists clenched and unclenched, and a few times, she took a step away as if she wanted to leave and forget about Rafe's existence. Rafe and the children watched her silent struggle, none of them moving. Rafe barely breathed. He had to find a way to make her stay. If she walked away now, she'd never talk to him again. He was about to say anything that would appease her when her shoulders sagged and tears glistened in her eyes before she smiled the saddest smile Rafe had ever seen.
