Chapter 40: Staid banker

"It always worried me, but it was a vague worry. But then last year, my friend Betty, who also raised her son alone, got the flu and she died. I didn't even think it was serious. Her son got sick shortly after and died, as well. I never expected that. One moment they were healthy, and the next they were both gone."

He could imagine how devastated she must've been. "And then you started worrying about something happening to you and the twins left to your parents' uncertain mercies?"

"Yes."

"Is that why you never introduced me to them? You were afraid I wouldn't meet their standards?" They'd planned to visit her parents shortly before they broke up, but Lindi had not been eager to go, had moved the date of their visit a few times.

She shrugged. "You were making a lot of money so they would've fallen all over you, especially if they thought I'd land a rich husband."

"I see."

She narrowed her eyes at him. "Why did you think I didn't introduce you?"
