Chapter 25: Trapped

She went to the machine and ordered food, but she was too worried about Zain to enjoy it with her usual abandon. What would she do if he didn't return? Would the machine keep giving her food? What if the energy source it needed finished?

She was trapped inside this silver cave. She'd noticed that whenever she became fearful, he showed her something that engaged her mind. One time, he had called her brilliant. More than any other compliment, that one had warmed her. He didn't mind that she knew numbers and could read. Instead, he tried to give her knowledge.

What if he was injured? Sir Robert's knights would capture or kill him if they saw him patrolling. She had no way to get out of this silver cage to go and find him.

Sitting at the table, worrying about him, would accomplish nothing. She went back to the room with the machines and then had an idea. Her heart beat faster. Not even when she'd realized the knowledge the hidden scrolls contained had she been this excited.
