"It's okay, calm down," Mara says as I come to, fully aware of my surroundings.

My head is reeling.

Kian was the one who saved me?

"How can an eight-year-old boy kill an Immortui?" I ask slowly.

Mara sits back, her lips pressed together tightly.

"You know more than you let on, don't you Mara?"

My eyes have narrowed and I'm fully aware of the accusatory glare I send her way.

"I'm bound by a promise I made."

"But I can do this for you, at least," she says. "Now that the memories are coming through, we should be able to dig deeper."

I play with my fingers, clenching them together, and then releasing them again.

"How could he see me?" I ask. "The vampire, Stephan."

Mara stills.

"He's dead, isn’t he?"

I don't know where the intuition comes from, but he had spoken to me, seen me, despite the fact I'd been reliving an event in my past that couldn't be altered.

"Yes."

But the other one, he couldn’t see me.
