62 An idiot with a heart
Ethan’s grip grew tight around the phone as he pulled it from his ears. His heart was thrumming though his mind urged him to be calm. He had to be calm—panic wasn’t his nature. Calm had been the only thing that had seen him through the hellish days on the street after he’d escaped from his father’s hands. He couldn’t lose that—not for the end of the world.
Yet, was a threat to Mara’s life not akin to the end of the world for him? Aaron’s words still echoed in his mind, churning inside him. Gracie was planning to kill Mara. Ethan knew most of Gracie’s plans—she’d let him in on some privy stuff in the past.
But, he was sure the plan didn’t include killing Mara, though now he more than understood that Mara had been nothing but a pawn in their hands. Ethan snorted, feeling his anger rise. He felt like squeezing the life out of the Sebastians and feeding their corpses to the dogs! How dare they?
