Back in the gaze of death

In fact, by the time the winter season came to an end, the place had gone through a stunning transformation and looked exactly like how it had been four years ago before the zombie outbreak. Only that the people were fewer and always armed for battle.

But that was not the main topic now, since winter had ended. It was time for them to carry on with their plan, and that was…

Reclaiming the military base!

...…

Winter has passed just as it came and the planet was once again back to its unpredictable weather season. It was more strange how this strange occurrence had no effect during winter and would let the snow cover the earth for as long as it wanted.

The sun was warm, and the passing wind was cool and refreshing but their hearts were beating vigorously as they gazed at the long expanse of open land in front of them.

After a short period of calm days, they were once about to plug into the mess that they had isolated themselves from. Living inside their newly built safe zone did not make them forget the original terror that plagued the planet four years ago but it had unknowingly filled their hearts with comfort and ignorance to some terrible knowledge of the apocalypse.

But that was it, that was all there was to it. After having their moment of respite, it was once again time for them to face the horrors outside their shelter as it was the only way to reach their goal which just had to be on the other side of this death valley.

Yes, Death Valley. This was what they had decided to call the space between the estate and the military base.

Edward stood on the sand, just at the edge of the estate and the wooden fence that they had dug here. His gaze pierced into the distance as he felt his heart thumping inside his ribcage.

His expression was serious and his eyes held burning resolve in them as his short hair fluttered along with the wind, his hair seemed to have grown longer and was now touching his back.

He wasn't alone here, standing with him were Fablo and the others; White Fang was here as well.

They stood next to one another forming a long line of people, there were over fifty who had come out here today.

Edward looked to his sides, on one side were White Fang and his people, and on the other side were Fablo, Priscal, and the others. Well, not everyone who was originally in Fablo's group had come out since some had been tasked to watch over the base along with some of White Fang's men. Old Martin, the fat woman, the elderly, and the depressed-looking women of White Fang's shelter had been left behind too.

'This is really happening' Edward thought to himself, he still found it difficult to believe that he had reached this point. He shook his head, shaking the thought out of his mind, now was not the time to be sentimental about his progress or how far he had come.

In front of him was an open piece of land that stretched for over ten kilometers, the mighty walls of the military base could be seen on the other side. Despite the distance between the estate and the military base, it was still easy to make out how formidable the tall fence was as it rose high into the air.

Countless black dots could be seen in the distance on the open field, moving ever so slowly.

But Edward knew that those black dots were in fact, zombies as their horrible stench reached all the way here.

Aside from that, there was a straight road that vehicles could take that connected the military base and the estate, it cut through the ten-kilometer field. Though taking the highway was the same as offering themselves to the zombies it was even unusable thanks to the destroyed tanks and trucks that blocked it.

"Alright everyone, I don't think I need to explain the dangers out there to all of you but I will still say this. Stay close to one another and look out for each other, report immediately if you encounter anything strange"

White Fang's voice pulled Edward out of his thoughts, he turned his gaze in the direction of the man and saw that Fablo had gone to stand close to White Fang at some point as they decided on how they were going to move next.

" We will separate into groups of ten and move separately but our distance should not be too far so we can support each other if needed" White Fang suggested to Fablo, the latter nodded in response.

" My people and I are more familiar with each other so it will be easier for us to work together, it should be the same for you guys," Fablo said, indicating that he would not be splitting the people from his group.

White Fang had no complaints about what Fablo said since it was the truth, his gaze only lingered on Lia and a few members of the group for a brief seconds before turning to his group.

It took less than a minute for White Fang to split the members of his group into four groups of ten and appoint a leader for the other three groups while he took command of the last group, since they were slightly over fifty it was within expectation that some groups would have more than ten people; Fablo did not mind this.

"Alright, we are ready to advance," White Fang said as he returned to Fablo's side.

Fablo only nodded in response before leading Edward and the others away while the other groups also began to move, they had already talked about how they were going to split and clear the place so there was no need to go over it again.

Each group maintained a distance of a hundred meters from each other as they moved out in a bird formation while using the highway as the heart of the formation, two groups spread out on both sides while one group would take the highway; getting too close would make it easier for the zombies to smell them out.
