The Kingdom Vitalis

Since calling off the engagement, he had resumed his life. At least the life that he adopted in this new era. Going out with his friends that he had not seen for a long time was part of his plan for the night.

After all, despite his past and the things he had done in his long life, he was still alive. A part of him felt empty, but the other half also wanted to continue living.

"Sir Adam." A man's voice called to him. The man bowed his head low, avoiding looking him in the face, before continuing with his message. "Your father wants to see you at his office."

What did his father want from him now? Checking on his watch, he was already running late. But he could not ignore him. He turned around, facing the man that had served his father for many years.

"Ok. You can go now." Dismissing the man from his presence as he proceeded to see his father.

It was slightly out of his way since he was about to go out of the castle. But his long legs quickly strode in the long hallways, passing through the different pictures hanging on the walls.

Some came from medieval times, while others were slightly new. Even the wooden frame had its mystery curved on its sides, signifying a meaning during its time. But all were part of their history.

He recounted many interesting things inside this castle, but human life was not enough to tell its tales. A couple of decades of happiness but a lifetime of war, hatred, and misery had been his life written within these walls.

Finally, reaching his destination, seeing the large doors were already open, his father had been expecting his arrival. Without waiting for an invitation, he marched into his office and stood before the mighty King.

"Where are you going?" King Charles stated without preamble, without even looking at him. His hands were busy with the collection of rare fossils he had accumulated for centuries.

It did not surprise him that his father knew about his plans to go out. The walls of this castle had eyes and ears, reporting everything going on around him.

"I thought I would visit my old friends while staying here." Adam walked to the bar and poured himself a glass of scotch, waiting for what his father had in mind.

The King's silence meant something, but he dared guess it might have something to do with their long-time enemies. His father's eyes blazed, busy concocting something evil.

"Is that even wise?" His father's eyes continued to examine his new fossils. "Partying all night." Without glancing in his direction. "You should use this time to plan your next attack."

That was what his father wanted, but that was a drastic and ancient way. This idea might have worked centuries ago, but doubting that it might still work in this new age.

"I am planning it, but we are not in medieval times." His mind reminisced some of their glory days when killing a beastly creature was as simple as slaughtering a wild animal.

Living in this new era had shown him how things had progressed with the modern times. Many of their enemies might have evolved.

However, explaining this to his father might be futile, knowing how stubborn his father was. His father had remained in the past, still basking in his former glory.

His hands picked up the alcohol, drinking another mouthful, but it did nothing to him, even one bit. He might need a barrel or more before becoming intoxicated. Not that he had tried before, never having any reason to get drunk yet.

"I know that, but we are still superior beings to them. They are still no match against us." The King roared angrily at him, slamming his hands on the table, making many of his things fall to the floor due to the hard impact.

His bellow echoed through the room, in the hallway, and probably somewhere in the castle. Many would tremble at his menacing voice, but not him. He respected his father but did not cower in fear of his presence.

"I know our strength, but how sure are we that our enemies had not improved just like us," Adam questioned his father's reasoning, pointing out what he had thought since their enemies had finally revealed themselves.

The times had changed. The battlefield had significantly transformed into a new arena, and the rules might not be the same anymore.

Besides, it had been a while since he had been into war or killed an enemy. Decades had passed since he had captured a wolf and eradicated these beastly creatures from their path.

"So, what do you suggest we do?" His father finally calmed down, eventually listening to reason, leaning on his chair with a not lit yet cigar in between his fingers.

Now that their enemies had finally revealed themselves. His urge to kill them all was still strong. But he could not blindly go to battle without knowing his enemies first.

He had to plan this carefully without committing any mistakes, or else he might only repeat the past, allowing them to escape from their inevitable deaths.

"Allow me to take care of this. Give me time to deal with these werewolves on my own." He dropped the empty glass on the side table, facing his father. "I promise you that I will serve their heads to you on a silver platter."

Adam turned on his heel and walked out of the room without looking back, determined to fulfill a mission, but it would need time, his father off his back, and a few missing pieces of the puzzle before moving forward.

But tonight, his friends were waiting for him. A party was a good distraction from a thought that was recently plaguing his mind. He rode his car but looked at the imposing castle before him.

It had been his home since he could remember. His eyes stared at its magnificent structure, but his heart anguished for the memory it held within its walls.

"Welcome back home." He said to himself, finding the irony behind those words, before driving away from what everyone expected to be his kingdom someday, the Kingdom Vitalis.
