Chapter 19 True Self (Updated version)

"Listen carefully," Rotarr said, his expression turning serious.

Viewing the seriousness of the situation, Jason began to listen to Rotarr attentively.

"Jason, what is the thing you desire the most in your life? The one thing that you would even sacrifice everything else for, and you must answer honestly," Rotarr asked with a serious expression while maintaining eye contact with Jason.

Listening to the question caught Jason off-guard, as he didn't expect Rotarr to ask this out of all the things he had in his mind.

But he had to answer it, watching Rotarr's expression. He knew that Rotarr was not in any mood to joke with him, and he also knew that if he tried to lie, he would get caught red-handed.

So, without further wasting any time, Jason said his answer, and if anyone who knew Jason even a little bit heard his answer, they would be shocked for life.

Even Jason himself didn't know that his answer would not only fully change his life but would change the life of his entire race.

"My desire is to acquire knowledge, the knowledge of the universe, the knowledge of dark and light, the knowledge of souls, the knowledge of gods and demons, the knowledge of time, the knowledge of life and death, the knowledge of the beginning and end, the mysteries of the unknown, the mysteries of day and night, the mysteries of creation and destruction.

"To acquire knowledge is like a blessing or a curse for me that I was born with," Jason spoke the truth without hiding anything about himself, as he felt that if he hid some truths, it would harm him more than good.

"Hahahahaha, now I know why only you got the chance to participate," Rotarr started laughing as loudly as he could.

Jason didn't react at all to Rotarr's reaction, as that was Jason's true self, so why should he feel shame about his true nature?

After laughing for a few seconds, Rotarr finally got a hold of himself.

"Sorry for showing you this behavior. I didn't expect this out of all the answers I thought would be," Rotarr apologized to Jason. It's not that he felt bad about how Jason felt, but he did it because it didn't suit him to show his behavior in front of others, as he was not some normal person.

"Jason, let me ask you, were you always so curious to acquire knowledge, or did it start after some specific time?"

"Is it necessary? If I was born like this, or it started to happen to me after some specific period?" Jason asked, as he didn't know the meaning behind the question.

"Yes, it is. It will help me to explain to you later what was about to happen later," Rotarr replied sincerely.

Jason then stared into Rotarr's eyes for a few seconds and finally got defeated as he didn't find any hint of a hidden motive in Rotarr's eyes. Jason started to narrate his story.

"It all started on my 8th birthday when I first got a book about how an orphan boy suddenly got mysterious power and how he tried to find the reason behind his powers.

"Since then, as days passed, I started to read book after book. Still, I didn't able to control my desire to learn more knowledge, and one day I sold almost half of my parents' assets so that I could get a single book.

"Even after knowing the incident, my parents just told me to ask them before I do something like this again. Other than my mom beating me mercilessly, they didn't do something big.

"At that time, I set some rules for myself to prevent me from doing something that I regret later.

"Till now, I have been searching to know mysteries, even if it meant not caring about my wife or the people who love me," Jason said with a hint of regret in his voice.

"But the greatest thing is that I don't regret even a little bit what I did," he added with conviction.

"Jason, I must tell you that I am not able to help you, but the information that I will tell you now will change your future," Rotarr said, his expression grave.

"What I said to you before about passing the test is only half the truth," he added, his tone serious.

"Half-truth," Jason cut Rotarr between his words.

"Yes, as you just completed the first part of the trial, but there are 2 parts to the trial," Rotarr explained.

"So, what will I gain even if I complete it?" Jason asked selfishly without even thinking about anyone else.

"That's my boy, but I can't tell you. What I can tell you is that if you fail to complete it, your entire race's future will be in danger," Rotarr said.

"How?" Jason asked somewhat nervously. He knew that Rotarr was not the type of person to joke like this, even though he had spent very little time with him.

"A part of this planet once used to be a part of another planet, but after that planet was destroyed, different parts of it wandered in space. One part hit this planet thousands of years ago."

"The part where you saw the mysterious words written on the wall used to be a part of that planet, and the words on the wall contain runic powers, similar to the ones used on your planet to make weapons, but more advanced than your thought process."

"The runes used to be deactivated, but a few days ago, they got activated due to some reason which I can't tell you right now.

For that reason, a part of the monsters on this planet gained power when they came into contact with the mana wave generated by the mana crystal."

"The main problem is that there is a portal that happens to be inside the cave where the words were written.

When the wave affects the monsters on this planet, it also affects a low-level hell creature known as Vetis, which gains more intelligence and power."

"Vetis used its power to kill a lot of other monsters, which it used as a sacrifice, and summoned another hell creature, which is also a low-level hell creature, but has more intelligence than any other creatures of its rank.

The monster is known as 'Glendin,' also known as Shapeshifter due to its ability."

"So, what is the problem with that? Even if it appeared on the planet, what can it do on its own?" Jason asked.

"You are right, but wrong at the same time. Let me ask you, Jason, what do you think is the most dangerous thing?" Rotarr asked.

Without waiting for even a moment, Jason replied, "Power and right knowledge."

"Yes. Then if the person didn't have power, then what would he use to harm others?" Rotarr asked.

"Knowledge," Jason replied seriously as he started to understand Rotarr's words.

"Now you get it. So, the main problem is due to the emergence of this new monster, Glendin. It will try to start the portal using the mana crystal to open a gate of hell, so that other demonic creatures can come into this world.

If he succeeds in doing that, not only you, but your whole race will be in extreme danger. If you fail to stop him before he succeeds in activating the gate, then not only you but also all the people you know will die," Rotarr explained.

"But how?" Jason asked as he understood that if he fails, he and his teammates will die. Still, how can they kill people that they have no idea about where they live nor do they know that those people don't even live near this planet?
