"Um… I… Uh…" I clear my throat. Why am I stuttering? "I couldn't sleep?"

"There's the tea for that."

Right. The tea he told me about. "I wanted some fresh air."

Yan tilts his head to the side as if to study me, but he doesn't say anything, making me feel conscious under his gaze.

I arch my brow and fold my arms across my chest, feeling bold. "What? I thought I'm allowed to go out? Are you suddenly retracting it?"

He shakes his head, slowly, the movement menacing. "You are. I'm just asking. It's quite the distance from the house, Ree. Did you walk here? By yourself?"

"I borrowed your bike…?" It sounds like a question because I'm guilty. Who borrows something from the owner without actually talking to them first? I hope he doesn't mind.

Yan looks from side to side, behind him, from a distance, and then back to me. "Where is it?"
