Chapter 67 - Come With Me!

"We both know that is not true. If anyone knows what's going on inside the Onix's mind it's you," Damon knew too well about his friend, to just take a lie from him. He kept his gaze on the demon, not at once blinking.

Denzel sighed, he knew Damon was one of the most stubborn demons he had ever met, and once he asked a question, he wanted a reply. "I may usually know what he might be thinking. But this time I'm in the wind too, Damon. All I can tell you is that it's nothing good!"

Damon leaned on the wall. He had not thought that a moment like this would ever arrive. There were uncertainties about how the demons would react to him capturing a Protector, but the Midnight Onix visiting was nowhere in his thoughts. It was quite unusual for the Onix to visit demons since recently.

"Do you have anything in mind?" Denzel asked, trying to understand how Damon might be feeling.

Damon shook his head, "No! Just plain confusion I must say." He walked past Denzel to the door, "Let's speak outside."

Denzel nodded, took a quick glance at Echo and her tiger, and left the room.

Everything was overwhelming Echo. She just got into a proper relationship with Damon, and now everything else was tumbling downhill. It was difficult for her to focus on one thing, she needed to send some information to the commander, but she did not know how. Then her mind moved on the butler. Damon trusted the butler so much that Echo herself began to think that the butler might have actually wanted to know something else. There was only one way to find out.

Sighing, Echo tried to think of a plan, 'Maybe if I spoke to her and cleared the air she should trust me enough to tell me why she was in my room? Was she telling the truth? Did she really want to just clean my room? But my room is clean!' She glanced around the room. Since it was only her second day, and she had not brought anything with her, the room was just the same as when she first arrived. So what was the butler really doing?

Echo closed her eyes and fell back on the bed. "Why did I have to come with no magic? How am I supposed to contact the Protectors without magic?" She hit the mattress with frustration. Why couldn't everything just be easy?

"Just talk to the butler. What could go wrong?" Hunter asked.

'Everything!' Echo thought to herself. 'Maybe if the butler hadn't seen my argument with Rose, she might have helped me. But after that... there is no way she would want to help me. She probably...' Her eyes widened. "Hunter! What if Rose planned all of this? Maybe she just wants to take revenge."

Jumping out of bed, before Hunter could reply, Echo found herself in the corridor. She felt like she had no control of her legs, and just floated all the way up to Rose's room door. Before she could enter, a surprising guest spotted her.

"Visiting the human?" Echo heard Denzel's voice behind her. She turned around to see the handsome demon giving her a sweet smile.

"Was I that obvious?" Echo asked. She did not what got over her to ask that question, but even she was astonished when the words slipped out of her mouth.

Denzel slightly twitched his eyebrow, "You are outside her room door. Also my apologies about earlier, in the dining hall. I was rude to you."

Echo smiled slightly, as she thought, 'What is up with these demons? They are suddenly sweet and handsome and everything else. The next thing you know they are mocking you. I should probably keep my guard up around him.' She turned back to the door, and knocked on it. Waiting for a while, she knocked again when there was no response.

"Damon took her out!" Denzel said, as he expectantly watched Echo's reaction.

Echo whipped her head around. Damon was out with Rose? How could he have gone out so fast? Her eyes widened, and she dropped her guard. Her forehead was creased with lines, and her eyebrows were creased. Was Denzel lying to her? With that thought, Echo's expressions eased. "Are you lying to me? How could someone have left within the five minutes I was in my room?"

"Five minutes?" Denzel laughed. This girl in front of him was surely something else, she had spent half an hour in her room and here she was telling him she only waited for five minutes. "You are a different kind of delusional I see. You were in your room for half an hour, sweetheart!"

Echo's eyes widened as she thought to herself, 'I spent half an hour in my room? How-how is that possible? Was I that deep in my thoughts?'

Denzel found Echo adorable as she frowned each time she thought, and then her face relaxed almost naturally. He could see why Damon would fancy this Protector. She was not just special in the sense of being the witches chosen warrior, but something about the way she did things, the way she changed her expression, it was so human-like. Denzel had fought with several Protectors before, and he found their poker face to be one of the main features about them, but this Protectors was at times like an open book.

"What are you staring at?" Echo asked, when she caught his eyes gazing at her face in a way she had never seen before. Not even Damon had that look when he watched her. It was a warm look, but not the gaze a lover would give. It was more of a protective gaze, almost like the one a father or mother would give a child.

Denzel snapped out of his trance, and went with the first words that came to his mouth, "Come with me!"

"What?" Echo was confused. What was the demon trying to say?
