Hard Task (15)

"She would have lived longer."

"The baby in her stomach…could have…lived."

The mayor's voice trailed off after saying these words. His eyes rolled back, and his body stiffened.

Lucien looked over his shoulder, making eye contact with Leon.

Leon blinked at him, clearly in a daze.

"What did he say?"

Lucien retracted his gaze and looked at the mayor's dead body with complicated eyes.

"It was the mayor. He was responsible for the illusion in the town. If I'm not wrong, he was doing it for his wife. He wanted her to believe that the townspeople were real."

"So both of them are monsters…?"

"You could say that. Anyway, if we deal with the wife, we can complete the hard task."

"Don't worry. It's done." Jeff's familiar voice echoed from the doorway. The body of the mayor's wife was dragged by Keith.
