The secret behind the closed door

I heard Aiden's steps running in my direction. He appeared in the room after a few seconds, taking a long-distance between us with his big steps and high speed. However, when he reached me, there was no sign of him running. His breath was regular, but his face looked worried.

"What the hell happened here?"

"Sorry," I turned red from head to toes, then pointed at the big spider net in the corner, close to the door I found a few seconds ago, and a big spider on it. Aiden rolled his eyes, took a broom from the previous room, then smashed the spider out, taking his net away as well. He was silently chuckling at me for being afraid of a spider, and I couldn't blame him. A werewolf is afraid of a spider. What nonsense.

Aiden put the broom in its place and looked at the door. It was a black wooden door with a massive metal handle of a wolf's head and an empty key lock. He turned at me and crossed his hands at his chest.

"Your father's office," he said, then looked around, "Where he was hiding his key?"

"Maybe..." I took a teddy bear out of the old bag the mad woman gave me and took a knife from the kitchen, then cut the bear's belly. When I put the knife away and took out all the cotton from the teddy's belly, I saw a key with a wolf's head inside. Then, I smiled triumphantly and looked at Aiden.

"I knew he put that bear for some better reason than a joke!"

Aiden chuckled.

"How smart..."

I didn't pay attention to his sarcastic tone, then put the key in the hole, turned it two times, and opened the door. An old dusty odor hit my nose making me sneeze. Aiden covered my nose with a scarf from my neck, then lit up a flashlight on his phone and stepped inside. I went after him with a flashlight burning, then tried to find a window in that entire darkness.

Aiden happened to be faster than I, he found the window a few seconds after entering the room, and opened it, letting the fresh forest air conquer the room. Then, he opened the curtains, lit up the room, and pointed at the wooden desk in front of us. It was near the wall in front of the door and had a wooden chair at the head of the table, as well as a big bookshelf staffed with old books of different kinds. What I could read from such a distance, there were books about nature, the history of this place, some fairy tales and others.

I went around the desk and sat on a chair, looking around the staff lying on it. There were some hand-written documents, as well as opened books on specific pages and even some letters. Suddenly, a picture of my father's head lying on the table on the documents I just had seen, hit my head making me jump and realize a horrible fact.

"Did my father die here?" I ask Aiden, but he just silently nodded as if coping with his emotions. He cleared his throat and answered my question in a few minutes.

"We found him here: sitting on his beloved wooden chair and his head lying on his desk. It looked like he went to sleep and never woken up," Aiden replied, then I saw grief written on his face. "I'm sorry, Letty. I should have told you this before."

"It's okay," I sat back in the chair and closed my eyes.

I tried to imagine what my father could have been doing here, except for writing his diary all his free time. Was he reading all those books just to fulfill his interest or for some specific reason? Why did he die here, sitting in his beloved chair? What made him die? Was he ill or...?

"Letty. Stop torturing your head, please," Aiden asked, then stepped closer to me and put a hand on my shoulder, "We'll figure everything out soon. Stop those tortures."

"Sorry," I pressed my head to his hand, trying to make myself smile.

Aiden leaned down and kissed my forehead instead of all those unnecessary words he could have said in this situation. But he didn't, and that's why I like him even more now. He can easily catch my mood and behave accordingly to it, making our relationships more comfortable than they could be.

I took my head up, looking at the table where my father spent half of his life, writing. Then, suddenly a book with a black cover appeared in front of me. I looked up while Aiden smiled.

"I think it's a perfect time," he said, then went out of the office, "I'll be around if you need me."

I was really curious about what her father could have written in his diary, but I wanted to leave Letty alone. That book with the black cover is the most precious treasure ever existed in the werewolf world, and I'm pretty sure Letty will share everything she read there with me. As I can guess, there could be such information that Letty won't understand without my explanation. Well, maybe I'm just thinking too much about myself that I could have been.

Some movement behind the window made me wake up from my thoughts and went out of the house, being pretty cautious. I noticed a gray wolf's tail before it hid in the nearest to the hut bush, then cleared my throat, attracting attention.

"Come out. I saw you."

A big gray wolf came out of the bush and sat in front of me, slightly wiggling his tail.

"What are you doing here?" I asked and crossed my hands on my chest.

{We took Aaron's body to Victor's Pack. He asked you to come to funerals. They'll be in two days. They need time to settle everything. I propose him the money as an excuse and apology...}

A gray wolf's mouth was shut, his amber eyes fixed on me. Nothing could have proven that he was just talking. Nothing but his head that was full of thoughts I could easily read.

"So, did he take the money?" I knew the answer before the gray wolf could think about it.

{No. He said it's not your fault, and if you want to pay for that, you need to get rid of those strangers finally. Other packs start to whisper about our situation and I'm afraid it won't add anything except a bad reputation for us.}

I nodded my head as I fully approve Victor's thoughts. We can't keep going around and playing hide and seek anymore. We need to get rid of them before they killed or harmed someone else.

"I agree. Start preparing for the camp. It should start three days after we got back from the mournings."

William nodded, then stood up and looked at me asking if he can go back to the pack, and having my node as an approval, vanished in the forest. I went back to the house and started cleaning it, making it comfortable for us to live. As I got it, Letty is very sensitive to the dust, so if we don't want her to sneeze all the time, we need to keep everything clean. Moreover, I didn't have anything better to do except clean, as she was busy reading. If we had to turn the fireplace then I'd have some more job but I have big doubts we'd need it. It's pretty hot outside, and the house keeps the warmth and cold in an equal amount thanks to the wood it's been made of.

"Dear daughter,

If you're reading those pages, then everything happened as I saw. First, I wanted to say sorry for making your life that hard. I know that my death, the grief, the memory loss, and the loss of your werewolf part were hard for you. However, if you're reading this, you coped with everything. I never had doubts about my daughter, that's why I made all of these for you to be happy in the end.

While reading those pages I left for you, you'll find answers for everything Aiden supposed you could have, and... Even more. I promise to answer all your questions but promise me to not read the entire diary at once. It's too dangerous...

We'll start from the beginning. When you were born and your mother died giving birth to you, I saw your future, and I didn't like it at all. The Moon God allowed me to see it and to change it, taking all the blame and nemesis at myself.

What had I seen? Your early death. It made me strongly believe I can change everything by burning the Pack at a certain time, preventing one of them from killing you to take my place. I never exposed my plans even to my Beta, Aiden's father, being afraid I could be betrayed. However, he never betrayed me. Thanks, Moon God.

Aiden's father was the most reliable man I ever saw. I never had doubts in Moon God's choice to make Aiden your mate. I hope, you think the same.

And now... Can we take a break, dear Letty? You promised to not read the entire diary at once...

Love you,

Father."
