What Have You Two Done?

About an hour later, the family of three sat down around the dining table. There were several dishes and side dishes lined on the table, taking over half of the table.

Yan Shu was sitting at the head of the table while Zi Mei and Yan Jing sit at both sides of the table. Two maids stood by the side serving the food.

The scene looked quite harmonious and peaceful. But, Yan Jing was facing an inner turmoil.

He was scared of causing a rift between his parents by asking too much. After all, he knew his mother would have to take the blame if his father were to get angry.

But, he feared that Tang Wan had been hurt in some way.

So whilst the maid served the food, he was lost in thought. After the maid finished serving, Yan Shu and Zi Mei began to eat.

But, Yan Jing didn't immediately pick up his cutlery. He was still deliberating on what to do.

When Zi Mei noticed this, she lifted her hand and poked him with a finger. Yan Jing jolted lightly and looked at her, before realizing that he was lost in thought and immediately picked up his cutlery.

He relaxed and tried to act casually lest they noticed he had suspected something. But regardless of how he tried to pretend, he was still worried.

He couldn't even eat well and this showed in how slow he was picking food. It was so obvious that even Yan Shu finally caught up to him.

Realizing what was troubling him, Yan Shu was immediately furious. He slammed his fork on the table.

"What exactly are you thinking of? If you're going to eat, then eat. If you're not, then scram!"

He yelled, scaring everyone into silence. Even the servants working around the house hurriedly retreated into the background to avoid being noticed.

His voice was so loud that it reverberated in the quiet hall. The table shook from the impact of the way he slapped it and the glasses of wine nearly fell.

Yan Jing's grip on his fork shook and he was obviously affected but he didn't cower. He could see that his mother was also calm but she was looking at him with worry in her gaze.

Yan Jing pursed his lips, a thought surfacing in his mind: He had to get to the bottom of the matter.

So, he placed his fork on the table and cleaned his lips. Then, he sat up and looked at Yan Shu.

"I want to see Sister Wan. Where is she?" he said, word for word. His gaze was fixed on Yan Shu's and no matter how dark the latter's gaze was, he didn't cower.

Since he had taken the first step, then, he had to go all the way.

Yan Shu's gaze flickered and his anger level only rose with Yan Jing's calm expression. He hadn't expected his son to go against him because of Tang Wan.

Since he was guilty, he was very sensitive to people's comments about Tang Wan. So no matter who it was, as long as that person mentioned her, he would feel that they were deliberately mocking and going against him.

Anger took over him and he yelled at Yan Jing without a care in the world. "Tang Wan this, Tang Wan that. What has that useless girl done to you? You keep asking about her as though she's your mother."

"But Sister Wan is my cousin." Yan Jing immediately rebutted. "I have every right to be worried about her."

Yan Shu scoffed. He folded his arms obviously pleased with himself. Then, he snorted derisively, "Well, your worry is about to be wasted because she'll never get better again. She'll be mad for the rest of her life."

Yan Jing's mouth fell open. It was as though he couldn't believe such cruel words were coming out of his father's mouth.

From the corner of his eyes, he could see his mother forgetting and panicking. She wanted to interfere but wasn't given the chance to because Yan Jing stood up from the chair and looked at Yan Shu.

"What do you mean by that? Didn't you say she's already receiving treatment?"

Then, he looked at Zi Mei. "Mom, you told me to finish my exams first before I come to check on her. You promised you were going to take care of her!"

Zi Mei was immediately confronted by his stare on her and she sat rooted on her seat, unable to say a word. She couldn't bear to make him even angry than he was.

This was Zi Mei's weakness. No matter how scheming or cruel she was, her greatest weakness was her son. And the only pure feelings she had was the motherly affection towards him.

So, she couldn't bear to see the disappointed gaze that he directed at her.

When Yan Jing saw how quiet she was, he knew it was a tacit agreement. He knew she would have refuted him if he was wrong.

At that moment, a huge wave of disappointment crashed into him and he felt a pang of sorrow in him.

But how much his disappointment was, was how strengthened he was. So, he didn't step back and continued his interrogation.

At that moment, he wasn't just a teenager. He was a young man stepping into the world of adults.

His gaze was sharp and his words were straightforward. "What have you two done?"
