Chapter Nineteen: Farewell, Villainess!

Eveline's POV

The company was extra energetic today. The second I walked into the large building, I could see people whispering and gossiping about yet another colleague of ours.

My eyes watched the people as they kept glancing in my direction while mumbling god-knows-what. Ignoring their obvious stares was quite impossible with the tension within the room.

"Eveline, did you hear?" Another colleague of mine who goes by the name Jasmine dragged me away from the intense staring, speaking quietly so that only the two of us could hear the content she was about to tell me. "Claire is gone!" Jasmine exclaimed, seemingly ecstatically elated about Claire's departure but honestly, I doubt many people will be sad about her absence.

That was some good news to hear on my first day back at work after the weekends. My face showed obvious delight as Jasmine continued, the happiness on her face slowly morphing into a smug expression.

"I heard," She began. "That it was Mr Draven who personally fired her."

Did Axel fire her?

"Why?" I inquired as my colleague grinned from ear to ear, nonchalantly stating that it was because of her ill intentions toward the company. I heaved a sigh of relief. He finally found out about her malicious acts and decided to act on them. I was glad that such a decision was made yet pity I was when I heard that the poor jobless lady had nowhere to go. Her world had crumbled so easily in a day despite her spending years building it and the cause of her tragic fall was evidently, Axel Draven.

Curious I was as to why Claire was fired out of nowhere therefore I made it a point to ask Axel about it after work. As I made my way up to the top floor of this infrastructure, the numerous pairs of eyes that stared right into me did not go unnoticed. It felt odd, being caught up in multiple rumours that surfaced so quickly. Not to mention the fact that these new gossiping materials were all produced on the same day.

I walked into my office and sat down on the leather seat behind my desk. Work was not permitted to begin this day as I was given the entire day to settle in. Now that I had already done what I was to do, boredom struck me. I let out a long sigh and closed my eyes. The day had barely started yet I already long for the arrival of tomorrow.

The lack of workload was driving me crazy - I needed something to do. Being too used to having mountains of work piles piled up on my desk had placed me at a disadvantage here.

I sat up, an idea struck me. What if I ask Axel whether I could start work earlier? Although he told me that I was supposed to start tomorrow, it should be fine to alter a rule, right? It's worth a shot asking him. Who knows, he might be moved by how hardworking I am and give me a bonus!

Feeling confident, I leapt out of my chair and skipped out of the office, stopping abruptly before another translucent glass door adjacent to my office door.

Knock, knock, I was granted access to the room.

"What do you need?" Axel questioned, flipping through different files, seemingly not interested in what I had to say. The documents piled up in front of the CEO, completely blocking my view of the male. Seeing the contrast in our workload fuelled my confidence that Axel will allow me to work and lessen his stress. This was the perfect time to propose my idea. How convenient.

"I want to start working now," I grinned, knowing that he will agree-

"Are you a workaholic? Are you so desperate to start working? Aren't you happy that I gave you the day off?" Axel cut off my proposal with three questions. His tone indicated that he was exhausted and unwilling to fight me yet was irritated with my request.

His sudden outburst made me unable to counterattack his inquiries. It seems like now isn't a good time to talk to him...

"Since you want to work so bad, come and sort out all of these documents," Axel mustered the strength to stand up, pointing at the mountain of paperwork. "You are my assistance now, this is what you have to deal with daily."

I gulped, when I meant work I did not expect so much. However, boredom got the best of me therefore I reluctantly accepted.

Axel watched as I strolled towards his table, my hands trembling while attempting to carry one-fourth of the workload. The papers overtowered me, the weight caused my hands to twitch. Carefully, I walked towards the opened door and straight into the office where I dumped the documents mercilessly on my desk.

"I'll start with these first," I informed Axel. The male nodded and checked his watch before saying that he'll be leaving first.

"Since you'll be doing everything, I'll be leaving now," Axel said nonchalantly and trailed to the elevator.

Anger was I when I watched the male leaving so unconcerned. Only when Axel was fully out of sight did I return to my office.

"Stupid Axel," I chanted under my breath. "When I asked for work couldn't he give me half of his work? He's making me regret my decision..." My pen worked flawlessly throughout every document, bulldozing my way through. My words matched my pen's flawlessness, words of insults and complaints rolled effortlessly out of my mouth. No one in the area could hear my unpleasant comments.

Axel's POV

Eveline had barged into my office and requested to work. An odd demand it was however I decided to play along and happily dumped all of my work on the poor girl.

I hid behind my work, a gleeful expression danced across my face as I imagined how Eveline looked right now.

I had expected the woman to decline and scurry off but when she suddenly picked up a pile of papers, that had indeed caught me off-guard. Behind my barrier of paperwork, my surprised expression was contained.

A mischievous idea popped into my head just as Eveline left my office. I got up and trailed behind the female, waiting for her to unload the documents occupying her arms before I opened my mouth.

"Since you'll be doing everything, I'll be leaving now," I announced, making my way towards the lift. From the corner of my eyes, I found Eveline's troubled expression. The corner of my lips curled into a delighted grin.

I entered the lift and waited for Eveline to close her office door before I exited the lift once more. Feeling playful, I decided to crouch down near Eveline's office doors and listen to what was occurring inside.

The sound of papers being flipped and the sound of a pen running across documents filled the room. Just as I was about to stand up and leave, Eveline let out a loud sigh and begin ranting.

'This was what I was looking for,' I thought to myself and stayed put, listening in attentively.

The smile on my grew as I heard her complaining about me. Who would've thought that teasing my partner would be so entertaining?

When Eveline was done ranting into the atmosphere, I stood up and stared at the paperwork waiting patiently on my desk through the open door.

"Since you're complaining, I suppose I'll help you," I mumbled before proceeding with work.
