A Tasking Job

"So, I'm going to be taking your place?" Ava asked the kind lady who has been putting her through the duties that were required of her as Mason's new assistant.

"Yes, next week is my last here," Becky said with a smile as she showed Ava how to organize Mason's schedule.

"Oh, why are you leaving?" Ava couldn't help asking if Mason was a Bad Boss, she needed to know, she wouldn't want to work in a toxic environment.

Becky saw the worried look on Ava's face and she smiled, "it's not what you think, Mason is one of the best persons you can work with, if I have my way, I won't leave. But I just got engaged and my fiancé is getting transferred to another state. It's either I go with him, or I risk us breaking up." Becky didn't look any bit offended that her boyfriend was making her choose between her job and he. Ava would hate to be placed in such a situation.

"Congratulations on your engagement," Ava said, smiling at Becky.

"Thank you. He hasn't gotten the chance to get me a ring yet, he will be getting me one soon," Becky said referring to her empty ring finger.

"What matters is the intention," Ava replied.

"You are right. Are you in a relationship?"

"No, I'm not," Ava replied with a shake of her head.

Becky gave her a funny look, "a hottie like you shouldn't be single."

"Nah, I have other things on my mind, and being in a relationship is the least."

"Hmm, I get you, but sometimes we just need someone to love us. You know, having your partner tell you how much he loves you, on that day you don't feel loved?"

"I know, but I'm enough for me," Ava said.

Becky wanted to say something but decided against it, "Hmm," was all she said before going back to show Ava how to make Mason's schedule.

"Well, it's a good thing that you aren't in a relationship, so you can fully concentrate on being Mason's assistant. Because, girl! It can be tasking."

"How tasking?" Ava asked.

"Well, there might be times that you would be required to pack up your things and go on a trip with Mason, sometimes you might be given heads-up before the trip, other times you would have just an hour to pack for a trip."

"Oh," was all Ava could mutter, she didn't know being Mason's assistant required that she traveled with him as well.

"You aren't having second thoughts, are you?" Becky asked her.

"No, I'm good," why would she change her mind because of that? So long as the job pays well and helps her to pay back Robinson the money that she owed him, she was cool with it. She could resign when she was done paying back her debt.

After about two hours, Ava could barely concentrate on the things that Becky was telling her, she was hungry, and she didn't get the chance to have breakfast before coming.

"How about we go out for lunch?" Becky asked as if reading Ava's mind.

"Um, I'm good," this was a highbrow area, Ava knew it would cost more to eat here than it would where she was coming from. She had only enough money to take the bus back to her place and barely enough for cheap snacks and maybe a bottle of water.

"Are you sure?" Becky asked her, not looking convinced by her response.

The door to Becky's office opened and a guy peered in. Ava recognized him from earlier, he was the guy who took her to Mason's office.

"Hi Trevor," Becky said smiling.

"Nancy and I are going for lunch, and we were wondering if you girls wanted to come?" Trevor asked, referring to both Ava and Becky.

"Are you buying?" Becky asked with a mischievous smile.

Trevor slowly shook his head, "you would never change."

"It was a harmless question," Becky said with an innocent shrug.

"Fine. But I'm only doing it because of Ava," Trevor said, flashing Ava a toothy grin.

Ava was surprised he could remember her name, she wanted to tell him not to bother about her but Becky didn't give her the chance to do that.

"We will join you guys at the reception in a minute," Becky said, and Trevor pulled back his head, closing the door.

"Now, you can't turn that down, it would seem rude," Becky said to Ava as she picked up her purse.

"Who is he?" Ava asked as she picked up her handbag and followed Becky out of the office.

"That's Trevor, he is the manager, and Mason's good friend."

"Oh, I see. And he mentioned someone else would be joining us as well?"

"Nancy, she's in the accountant, we all have lunch together from time to time."

"Does Mason join you guys as well?" Ava needed to prepare herself if she was going to be facing Mason.

"Nah, he rarely takes lunch, he mostly eats only twice a day. He prefers to take coffee instead."

That seems weird, Ava thought, restricting yourself to eat only twice a day, but she didn't say it out, just simply nodded.

When they got downstairs, Trevor was waiting there with a beautiful lady by his side. She looked immaculately beautiful, everything about her seemed perfect, from her hair, makeup, and even the dress that she wore, nothing was out of place.

"What took you so long?" She asked referring to Becky as she impatiently tapped her heels against the polished floor.

"Good afternoon to you too," Becky said, not bothered about the lady's rudeness. She turned to look at Ava. "Guys meet Ava, soon to be Mason's new assistant. Ava, meet Nancy, you've already met Trevor."

Nancy gave Ava a cursory look, not making any effort to hide her disdain. "Welcome," she mumbled, before turning to walk out the door.

Trevor shook his head in disapproval, "ignore her, it's that time of the month."

"Trevor, I'm quite sure you don't have a death wish!" Nancy barked as she overheard him. Becky started laughing and she threw her arm around Ava's shoulder.

"Ignore her," she whispered in Ava's ear.
