The following week they were able to settle into a comfortable routine. Waking in Declan’s bed to cozy late mornings and breakfast, followed by a stroll in moderate winter weather. Desiree enjoyed watching the progress the groundsmen made in bringing the garden back to life. They talked casually about their upbringings during their walks. While it was clear they were on opposite sides of wealth, there was a familiarity to longing and loneliness, especially since they’d both lost their mothers before coming of age.

She would take up her chair at the quilting table. Declan would sit up in the bed on the far wall. Before lunch, he’d have read through at least one book and be well on his way through a stack of correspondence mainly concerning the preparation to set sail and face Blake Devlin. The bed would be a mess of opened letters with a stack of responses for the evening courier.
