Chapter 22: Last Night with the Alpha

“I couldn’t sleep,” she said, unable to stop stitching.

“I thought you might have… gone back to the village.”

“No, I… I don’t feel safe there.”

“Do you feel safe in here?” he asked.

“I don’t know that I’ve ever actually felt safe, Declan.”

She felt a tear she couldn’t explain roll down her cheek.

“Those men could have done anything to me…”

“You are safe here, with me,” Declan promised.

“But, I don’t even know you.” She stopped stitching to look at him. “At one point, you loved that woman enough to marry her and she and I are like night and day.”

She look at him as he contemplated her words. But he gave no response. She returned to her stitching.

“I am glad you showed mercy for that woman and her children.”
