Chapter 39: All That We Know

The inn rooms didn’t have their own showers, but had one big one on the second floor. Since Rowan and I were the only guests, however, I had the room to myself.

The floor was unpolished stone to prevent slipping. Different colored quartz made up the walls. Instead of a shower head, a controlled waterfall continuously crashed into a shallow pool, which drained at the edge of the room. At first I worried this was an unheated natural spring, but when I stepped into the water it was deliciously warm.

I sat in the massive in-ground tub slowly, adjusting to the heat.

Rowan had suggested I spend as long as I wanted in here. He had small errands to run. I couldn’t guess what they were, but I didn’t argue.

‘I’m sorry,’ Reigina Mathilde had told me. ‘People and objects from the Other world can fall here, but the only account of anything here going there was through the banishment curse. There is no way to alter it once it’s cast, and it takes about four years to cast it.’
