Chapter 30: Taking the Next Step

The silk of the oriental rugs in the estate hallways felt alive on Emilia’s feet. The pictures hanging on the walls – the eyes and faces of the subjects followed her, moving and watching her.

It was like she was seeing everything at a molecular level – the way the atoms moved and the invisible energies that existed between everything.

Emilia went to Tommy’s suite. She hadn’t had the time to fully process what had happened to her, but she wanted to tell him – he was the first person she thought of to tell.

Tommy was at his desk, a sketchbook open, pencil in hand. He scribbled furiously.

Emilia watched, the lines jumping off his page and taking form. She could see what the sketch would become before he had even finished it.

His shoulders were hunched over, jaw tense. She could tell he was purposely not looking at her.

“You're mad at me?” Emilia asked, taking a few steps closer.

Tommy sighed and put the pencil down. He rubbed the back of his neck.
