Chapter 31: A Moment's Peace

Tommy lay on his back under the stars. There was a crescent moon in the sky and the torches in the gardens flickered in a soft breeze.

Beside him, Emilia was also looking up at the sky.

He wondered what she saw, now that her eyes saw more than just physical matter. At least, that was how she’d explained it to him. He wasn’t sure what that meant.

Emilia turned towards him, pressing her cold body to his side.

“Look over there,” she said, pointing to the horizon.

Tommy turned and saw a rush of shooting stars across the sky. He gaped, eyes widening as he stared. Living in Seattle, he’d never had the chance to see shooting stars, let alone a whole meteor shower!

Streaks of light shot from one horizon to the other, trailing in the sky like streamers. They outshined the stars around them.

Tommy was pulled from his trance when Emilia nibbled on his ear. He chuckled and turned on his side so he could face her.
