Chapter 47: The Offering

Emilia’s ears pricked when she heard the sounds of the resistance intercepting the army. Amun would not be traveling with them, but he would not hesitate to return and fight with them if he thought there was trouble.

That was where Emilia came in. She pulled her cellphone out, a burner phone she’d been holding onto since Seattle, reactivated to make one call. Dulcinea had had her number, so Emilia knew Amun would have it too. That was after all, how Dulcinea had found her.

Emilia swallowed. Her heart still ached when she thought of Dulcinea… her friend… her familiar. Forever bound and forever betrayed.

“Well, well, I was wondering when you’d call,” Amun’s smooth, seductive voice answered the phone.

“Aren’t you home yet?” Emilia asked, adding just a hint of desperation to her voice.

“Home?” Amun asked.

Emilia could hear the suspicion in his voice. She’d have to lay it on thick in order to keep him distracted, to get him to come to her.
