Still fuming by the price he paid for his ride, Brian inspected the Timer on his wrist. It had the appearance of a smart watch but was directly encrusted into his body and was impossible to detach itself once placed.
The Timer was a godly piece of technology, a miracle of engineering that was shrouded in mystery. Nobody knew how it came about, at least not the common folks. It was like a personal computer and had the most advanced AI of the Nembus system. It did absolutely everything of the daily life thus mainly served as a wallet.
The official currency used in the system wasn't credit or unit or any of all those past commodities, it was time, yes time. It wasn't always like this, Gary said everything changed 2 years after his father's death.
There was a planetary operation forcing people aged 15 and above to wear these Timers or risked being excluded from all activities, death was even used as a threat in certain case. From the richest to the poorest, it made no difference.
Timers was thus introduced, it functioned simply. When it integrates itself into your body, it granted you 11 years of time to live and from that moment onward the Timer starts its countdown.
The idea was at first widely fought, but the timer had its merits. it maintained your body in good condition, it could cure all diseases, even the hardest form of cancer and most importantly, it stopped your body from aging after the age of 40.
Looking at his Timer, Brian's countdown was 09Y:11M:23D:05H:45m:10s. He moaned "A little bit less that 10 years"
"In need of time ?" someone asked behind him. jolting upright and brought back out of his reverie, Brian turned to look at the source of the voice
Standing there behind him was a slender girl, barely shorter than him. She had short blonde hairs with a very pretty face, wore a white T-shirt, a sleeveless jacket with black gloves covering her hands to her elbows
She wore a mini panty jean who just covered her well proportioned buttocks, under it was a black pantyhose who covered her legs. as shoes, she had brown boots with laces loosely tied.
He replied to her "Don't we all Raïssa ?" and started walking to class
"Some more than others" she said cheerfully following him and continued. "Speaking of which, I have the perfect business opportunity for us"
"I don't want to hear about it." He said while pacing up.
Running behind him she said urgently "Listen to me first, it won't be like last time and it pays well."
"Just like you promised last time. You still owe me, I haven't forgotten." He replied while opening his class door, the teacher was already present and so were his classmates still preparing themselves with some who just came like him"
"Well well well, mister Onana." Said his teacher Mr Myers, A scholarly looking man who clearly received his timer after his late 50s. "We are honoured to have you back among us. Look up people, mister Onana is back, a round of applause please."
There was a laughter around the classroom and Brian himself laughed guiltily.
"I trust you remember your place Onana" said Mr Myers with a chuckle. Brian replied "Yes sir, good morning sir" and went to his sitting place with Raïssa following behind him.
They both went to their usual sitting position next to each other on the bench before the last of the middle row.
Mr Myers continued "As everyone is present with enthusiastic faces in front of me, today won't be a normal lecturing class. As you all know, it will be the last day here and thus, we will talk about orientation." He taped his Timer and a large holographic screen materialized in front of them.
Brian wasn't very attentive, he knew what he wanted and his next course. He should have been there already but failed his selection.
"Listen, I promise you 1000% that this time around it pays well, we will have 3 years each minimum. And for last time, you can't input the fault to me." Raïssa shushed next to him. "Look at these files" she said while touching his Timer with hers.
Brian said nothing, touched his Timer and a small holographic screen was displayed and he brushed through them. It was a detailed plan of Terminal 3, a superstructure low earth space station terminal dock.
This space station was above clouds and was for small ships like patrol boats, fast attack craft, Frigates and small cargo ships.
Brian stared at her incredulously, these plans were pretty much detailed and certainly very difficult to access. It wasn't the first time Raïssa surprised him like this, he knew she was the daughter of a local boss involved in all kinds of crimes.
He always had the impression she involved herself in her father's affairs because she wanted to be approved by him, so he went along sometimes because he needed time. But this was the next level.
'maybe she's much more involved in them, she always remains vague and simulates deafness every time I ask her about it' He thought.
"Don't look at me like that !" she shushed "it's nothing overly complicated, we have an inside man. The thing to do is also simple, at 4 PM standard time, a small cargo ship will dock having on board a cargo of lithogen.
During the dumping, we need to sneak in and take in some boxes. The security is lax, it consists of few drones and some men. If everything goes to plan, they won't notice."
"What do you mean by the security is lax on a lithogen shipment? it's one of the most expensive metal out there !" He replied while also shushing.
"It means you're interested then?" she asked
"No I'm just curious, I may be considering." He said
"The owner didn't declare his cargo as lithogen, that's why the he can't have maximum security for goods not supposed to be too secured, it will be too suspicious and the customs will check" she said.
Brian remained silent for 15 minutes, staring absentmindedly at Mr Myers speaking. Raïssa didn't speak too, but kept shifting nervously next to him. finally, he shushed at her.
"Look, the battle selection ground for the Imperium Academy starts on Monday, I need to be ready for it this time around."
"Oh, you're still going this year ? I gave up. I'll go to another one or maybe join a high human program and I could be in special ops later." she replied.
Then in a last convincing plea she continued
"Brian, you're the most skilled fighter I know and I've seen a lot believe me. I need you to cover my back in case something goes wrong."
'You haven't seen Gary' he thought, but said "Okay tell me more about it later"
