Chapter thirty four

" I want to work with you....I mean I want to work for you, at your company, where I can earn my own money. I don't just want to be a pregnant lady who spends all your money" Sophie told Marcus who sat and watched her, mouth agape.

"You're pregnant, you shouldn't stress yourself" Marcus said trying to dissuade her from her plan.

" I learnt that being pregnant and weak will only make childbirth harder. And I don't want that."

"I.... Sophie...."

"Pleassssssseeeeee" she begged him pouting prettily.

" Ok but you'll stick with me. I can assign the post of my manager to you. Am looking for one anyway."

"Ohh.....thank you Marcus!!" She began to dance around.

"But you'll still need to learn, you don't know what to do" he told her trying to calm her.

"Of course I will! Am a fast learner though, you don't have to worry. Don't worry about the fact that I don't have college degree too"

He gave her a small smile and stood up to go upstairs. But she drew him back.

"Where do you think you're going?" She asked him.

"Where am I going? to my bedroom to rest of course...or do you want to come along?" He asked her slyly. Winking at her and she blushed.

"Get lost" she said. Letting go of his arm and walking away hurriedly. She was supposed to go to bed but she had gotten quite a nap that afternoon and she was deprived of sleep now. Marcus must be tired from all the days work for he has retired to bed early.

Maybe she should just watch some night movies. She settled herself on the sofa, grabbed the remote and started changing channels. Tommorow was going to be a long day.

She got up quiet early the next day, she arranged her room, and took her bath, she had to wear a slightly bigger top over her short skirt, to cover her baby bump. She still looked smart though. A knock sounded on her bedroom door. And Marcus spoke out.

"Will you get up and take your bath. We can't be late."

Sophie laughed out loud. And grabbed her handbag. She walked to the door and opened it.

"Am ready!"

"You're one optimistic fellow" he smiled at her disbelievingly.

She walked past him and went downstairs with him behind her.

They left the house after eating the pleasant meal that Sophie had prepared.

The ride In the car was a companionship silence, and Sophie was grateful for that. She wasn't in the mood for small talks. And she was craving really hard for some ice cream and cake. The thought was hard to get over. And she was salivating on it already.

She faced Marcus who had a serious expression as he faced the road.

She was hesitant at first. He noticed and faced her for a few seconds.

"What's the problem?" He asked.

"I don't know... but I think am craving something"

"What?"

"Ice cream and cakes."

"We'll get that when we get to the office Sophie"

"Thank you Marcus". She sent him a wide smile.

They got to the office about thirty minutes later. And as they walked into the company, many eyes turned their way.

"Good morning sir"

"Good morning sir, the files you sent for are ready"

"Good morning boss. Do you need coffee"

Many staffs greeted him as they walked into his office and he only nodded to most of the greetings and talks. No one even acknowledged her, and some of the female workers even sent her a deadly glare.

"Isn't that the maid who got herself pregnant for the big boss?" She heard a voice said and she looked back. Smiled at them and bowed a little.

They scoffed at her.

Stella came over to meet Marcus and collected the briefcase from him.

"Good morning sir" she greeted him and faced Sophie."Good morning Sophie, how are you feeling today?"

Sophie smiled thankfully at her." Am doing good thanks Stella. It's good you don't hate me like tge others here" she said and Stella laughed.

"Who hate you?"

"Who hate you?"

Both Stella and Marcus said at the same Time.

She faces Marcus and saw his hardened expression.

"No...no..... Marcus. It's nothing big, i was only kidding" she said trying to explain not wanting to get anyone into trouble.

"You don't seem to be kidding when you said that" Stella told her not happy too.

"I.....no...well let's leave that, am Marcus manager as from now on. Would you mind helping me get sorted" she told Stella swiftly changing the topic.

"Seriously!" Stella said facing Marcus for confirmation and he shrugged with the 'there's nothing I could do" look.

"Wow....wow... great, that's nice, try to settle down now okay, I'll get your office arranged soon enough for you"

"Thanks Stella" she sent her a sweet smile and walked over to Marcus.

"My ice cream and cake, you didn't get it for me" she said to him.

"Oh.....sorry, I totally forgot.... Stella can you get one of the intern downstairs to get me a cake and ice cream for Sophie."

"Ok sir, I'll be right back."

After Stella left, Sophie sat down on one if the comfortable looking sofas in his office.

" I love your office, it has a very beautiful view from up here"

"Thank you"

He began to work on the paper works which was already placed on his table.

She studied him as he worked. Her Marcus, her man. Did she have a right to call him hers? He was the father of their unborn child, she was living with him. Though she wouldn't have if it wasn't for the way her life was on the line. He was her man, her brutal handsome sexy man. She loved him. With all her heart. He may not love her but she do love him. And she prayed that one day, he'll love her as much as she loved him.

Sophie was sitting in her assigned office, the one Stella has arranged for her, it was spacious and quiet pleasant to see too. And it was closer to Marcus office than she'd expect. She was thankful for that, Stella did a great job.

A young pretty woman, probably in her early twenties barged into her office without knocking.

"Hey ma'am, here's your ice cream."

Sophie knew her, she was the receptionist. The one she'd met that day on her first interview who gave her the unsmiling face.

Sophie smiled, trying to be friendly." You don't need to be so professional with me, am Sophie, what about you?"

She scoffed and folded her arms. " Am sorry ma'am but I don't want to be friends with you, let's remain professional with each other." With that she hissed and stomped out.

Sophie's face went blank. What did she do wrong. She was still in thought when her phone rang. The caller ID says Stacy. A smile brightened up her pale face.

"Hey Stacy, what a good friend you are." She said as she picked.

"Sorry babes, I was too busy to make frequent calls. I wasn't even in town. Just came back into the country yesterday."

"Woah! Rich woman, going up and down with who this time?"

"Me, myself and I."

Sophie laughed, and Stacy joined too.

"Well, life hasn't been treating me the same way, am going through a lot right now. You won't be able to hear half of it if I begin my story" Sophie told her

"I can and I will, but it's not over the phone, okay, why don't we meet up"

"Meet up? Hmmmmnn... Am working...and I don't know when I'll be less busy, maybe ......."

"No Sophie, no maybe, let's meet up. I really need to see you. I've missed you a lot. How about Saturday, you Don't work on Saturdays, do you."

"No babe. I won't."

"You won't?"

"Nevermind, Saturday it is. At your place right?"

"If course. Where else could be better?"

"Ok see you then, bye. I love you babes."

The chuckling of laughter was the only thing she heard before the line went off.

Weird.
