One day after school, the three of them selected a restaurant to try out. It was new and luxurious. Usually, Evelyn would never frequent such restaurant where she needed to empty her pocket entirely to pay for a meal. It wasn't that she was a miser; she just felt it wasn't worth it.
However, since Ashley and May were curious, Evelyn tagged along because they didn't wish to disappoint these friends she earned after ages. Her mentality then was to please them, so that they didn't get tired of her and left her.
Once the meals had arrived, May dropped the drink on her skirt. It was annoying, but Evelyn couldn't being herself to be upset at her new friend. After all, she already apologized, and it was a mistake.
Evelyn excused herself to the washroom to clean up. Her friends had all smiles on their face then. And the happy mood Evelyn had dropped slightly after returning from washroom. The two of them took pictures together in front of the food.
Of course, this wasn't the first time this happened. More than often did Evelyn feel excused. She usually held the phone when the two of them clicked pictures, hoping one day she would be included in the frame. And when she was in rare moments, they were never posted across social media sites.
Albeit disheartened, she knew that it was because they didn't want to be seen with her due to consequences. After all, no one wished to be a victim of Annalise. It should be already more than enough that they were willing to approach her.
As she walked over to them, they put down their phones.
It was fine. Evelyn comforted herself. The food was getting cold, and not being included in a picture shouldn't be a big issue. Evelyn reminded herself to not be petty.
As they started to eat, the conversation carried on between Ashley and May. Evelyn wanted to add in her points, but there was no place for her to do. The two of them were close friends prior to being acquainted with her. It stood to reason they would have a lot to talk about.
Evelyn was satisfied to not have her meals alone.
And then, May decided to include her in the conversation.
"What do you think of Landon?"
Landon?
Just the thought of him was enough to color her cheeks in red.
Before she could respond, May added, "Ash had a crush on him since forever."
Evelyn's eyes shifted to Ashley at that. Upon seeing how Ashley stared at the ground shyly, Evelyn paled.
No, she shouldn't be feeling in this manner. Landon felt nothing for her. As much as disheartening as it was, the boy hardly spared her a glance during this whole time.
And Ashley was her friend. She should be supportive.
"That's cute," Evelyn replied.
"Right. Ash was thinking of backing out from it, saying she isn't worthy of Landon. Of course, I scolded her regarding it. Don't you think they will be perfect together," May said.
"Stop it, May. I am no one special," Ashley softly expressed.
Looking at Ashley, Evelyn could relate. After all, she had the same sentiments. Landon did feel as though he was from an entirely different world.
"I think you are good, really good, and Landon will appreciate it. Don't put yourself down in this manner," Evelyn encouraged.
"Evelyn is right! You can't give up, Ash."
About this, Ashley showed a hesitant expression momentarily before nodding.
After this, May had her eyes on Evelyn and asked, "You care about Ash a lot, right?"
Evelyn was confused as to why May was suddenly questioning her on this. Nevertheless, she responded, "Yeah, she is my friend."
"Great then. You wouldn't mind doing her a favor, right?"
What sort of favor?
Evelyn looked at May questioningly.
"Help Ash chase after Landon, and then find out about his feelings for Ash. You see how shy Ash can be. You shouldn't have any issue with this matter?"
Having her help Ashley chase after Landon was hard, but for her friends, Evelyn didn't mind. This was the first time Ashley and May let her in on a secret of theirs. She didn't want to disappoint them and have them distance themselves from her.
"Sure. What is it?"
May showed a bright grin at that.
"You are great, Evelyn! Knew that we could count on you."
