Chapter 32:The Angel You Crave

I open the next morning to Jason at the other side. "Hi."

He doesn't look good. Dark circles ring around his eyes, and I have the distinct feeling that unlike me, he didn't sleep last night.

I realize that maybe I'm not being fair to him? He had to perform surgery on his friend yesterday. He must have gone through the same emotional and mental stress I went through, maybe even more. Just because he held a gun afterwards doesn't mean anything changed.

He speaks before I can try to say something to that effect.

"You're right. I was stupid for trying to keep you in the dark and having you find out in the way that you did. If you have any questions for me, I'm ready to answer them as honestly as possible. I won't keep anything else back."

He's handing me what I've been asking him for weeks. I can't even be petty and pretend I'm no longer curious. "We'll talk on the way to the hospital? I'll drive."
