Chapter 35: The Angel You Don't Know (II)

AZRAEL'S POV NOW

Suleiman is in surgery when I arrive at London.

He'd had enough foresight to make my transition smooth before he was shot, though, and the fact that I'm near unrecognizable through my beards made it better. I hadn't expected to hear that he'd been shot on his way to a meeting yesterday, which means I came in just at the right moment. I've let everything go to rot for long enough.

Ignoring Suleiman's safety is the most careless thing I've ever done. He was protecting me, acting as a mole in Mateo's empire, reporting back to me and the Consolidation. But none of us had thought to keep him safe.

Like every man with something to lose, he's being treated in his Kensington townhouse instead of a hospital. I stay still while his wife paces in front of me, gnashing her teeth and rubbing the place where her hijab meets her forehead.
